At the time of the EDM star Tim Bergling aka Avicii's tragic death in April 2018, he was close to finishing a new album and the DJ/producer's family decided not to keep the music locked away – instead they wanted to share it with his fans all around the world. Bergling had left behind a collection of almost finished tracks, alongside extensive notes and email messages shared with his collaborators and songwriters. Those collaborators, including Albin Nedler and Kristoffer Fogelmark, continued to work on the music in order to get "as close to his vision as possible" for the new posthumous Avicii album, Tim. "SOS" feat. Aloe Blacc and "Tough Love" are the first tracks to be shared from the album.

Bergling expressed his desire to work with Aloe Blacc in some of the personal notes he left behind. The pair had previously collaborated on the hit "Wake Me Up." "I feel like ‘SOS' was a song that was probably ahead of its time for when he wrote it," Blacc says. "He wrote these lyrics obviously about some of his battles, and I think it's a really important topic to approach and to share, especially with his visibility and his access to ears and hearts. To give people the words to be able to say 'I need help.'" "Tough Love" is decidedly more upbeat and puts a heavy emphasis on the Eastern instrumentals that had recently inspired the producer during his studies of the traditional music of northwest India.

DJ Mag's digital editor Charlotte Lucy Cijffers reflected on the young DJ's enormous influence on the global EDM community writing: "Bergling's knack for making catchy club records that really spoke to ravers was felt no greater than in the States – he was one of the first EDM acts to really make it in America. Alongside fellow Nordic selectors Swedish House Mafia, Avicii defined what it was to morph from headline DJ to full-blown celebrity."

Avicii's net proceeds from the Tim album will be donated to the Tim Bergling Foundation. The project's initial work will concentrate on offering support to individuals and organisations in the field of mental health and suicide prevention, before expanding to cover other issues such as climate change, development assistance, nature conservation and the protection of endangered species.
